About the show
Briege Devlin is a storyteller and comedian whose work sits at the tender intersection of laughter and truth. Raised in a small Catholic loughshore village in rural Tyrone, she grew up as the only woman who was “out” — a rural lesbian coming of age in the 1990s, navigating isolation, guilt, shame, and the quiet bravery it took to survive and belong.
After 20 years as a teacher, Briege realised that her lived experience carried a story worth sharing. What emerged was Out in the Country, a deeply personal one-woman comedy show about becoming the first woman to come out as lesbian in her village - and what it means to live authentically in a place where tradition, faith, family, and community run deep.
Through sharp humour and heartfelt storytelling, Out in the Country explores self-acceptance, self-discovery, motherhood, friendship, grief, healing, and the courage it takes to claim your truth. Set against the backdrop of rural Ireland, the show captures both the pain and the beauty of small-community life, offering audiences a rare balance of big laughs and quiet tears.
Audience feedback consistently describes the show as “the perfect balance of laughter and emotion” and “a great night out for the whole family.” It is a story rooted in one woman’s experience, yet it resonates far beyond it - speaking to anyone who has ever felt different, hidden, or brave enough to be themselves anyway.
