About the show

Written by Wole Soyinka and directed by Mojisola Kareem, Utopia Theatre presents 'The Swamp Dwellers'.

Set in the late 1950's as a Nigerian family living in a hut built on stilts over swamps on the Niger Delta await the return of their twin sons from the city for the harvest. When only one son returns, they fear the worst. Set against the relentless rain and possibility of a failed harvest, tensions rise when a stranger arrives.

In Yoruba mythology, twins are spiritually connected. if one twin dies, the other twin will not survive. The swamps are dangerous places, believed to be the home of a god; The Swamp Serpent.

This new production from Utopia Theatre explores themes of nature, survival, climate change, tradition, modernity, wealth and poverty in a story about change and conflict between the generations.

This exciting and powerful drama is brought to audiences at the Utopia Creative Hub, over two weeks with evening and afternoon performances.
