New Zealand composer and pianist Jonathan Crayford debuts his brand-new project, Transformations, at Ladbroke Hall, joined by Zhenya Strigalev on saxophone, Orlando le Fleming on bass, and Ernesto Simpson on drums.
Crayford’s music brings Afro-Cuban rhythm into a distinctive jazz language shaped by decades of experience and exploration. One of New Zealand’s most original musical voices, he has spent time between New York and Europe, performing and collaborating with artists including Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Murray, Groove Collective and Mambo Macoco, as well as writing for film.
After four decades of developing his voice as a pianist and composer, Crayford presents Transformations for the very first time. Expect a performance rooted in rhythm, improvisation and rich musical interplay, with four highly individual musicians bringing their voices together.
His work has earned critical acclaim and numerous awards. Mike Nock described him as “a true original” and “one of the very finest creative musical talents to have ever come from Aotearoa.”
Transformations is brand new. This is its first outing, anywhere.
