Medina Swing at Kings Place, London
Featuring - Medina Swing
Medina Swing is more than a fusion, it is a dynamic sonic collaboration in both traditions and modernity.
Driven by the vision of Casablanca producer Maurice Elbaz (Hafla Casablanca) this project both celebrates Moroccan identity and heritage but brings a new Maghrebi-futurism, placing it squarely in the 21st Century. From the exquisiteness of Andalusian Noubas and emotional depth of Melhoun poetry through to the popular classics of Hocine Slaoui and the golden age from 1950–2000, the group infuses secular melodies with the liberating spirit of swing. Jazz rhythms provide sonic residency for complexity of the Tar and Darbouka to express themselves, while Jazz's inherent improvisational ethos breathes new life into classical instruments, developing new conversational vocabulary to the music. Three Masters, One Unique Virtuosity:
Driss Nigra (Oud): The guardian of the traditional soul, his surgical precision blends the purity of maqâms with modern phrasing. Ahmed Guendouz (Nylon Guitar): The architect of fusion, weaving harmonic bridges between Andalusian elegance and Jazz syncopation. Abdelfattah El Husseini (Percussions): The beating heart of the trio, merging Tarija, Darbouka, and Tar into a universal groove. Medina Swing transforms every stage into a Mediterranean "Jazz Club" where tradition becomes an inexhaustible source of innovation. "We play the music of tomorrow with the heart of our ancestors."
