About the show
Expect an intimate, deeply atmospheric evening: songs, stories, spoken word with two of the UK’s most distinctive and innovative songwriter–performers.
Across the evening, Dan Whitehouse and Polly Paulusma create a shared musical space where song and spoken word blur, and where two distinct voices meet in compelling dialogue. Moving between solo moments and subtle interplay, the set flows from sparse piano and guitar-led songs into more expansive textures, with each artist responding to the other’s work in real time.
Dan Whitehouse’s work has been described as “Intriguing” and “Gorgeous” **** (The Guardian), and “Unflinching… haunting” (Clash Magazine), marking him out as a songwriter of rare emotional clarity.
His most recent material, Only Love, shaped between England and Japan, explores presence, distance and fatherhood with striking honesty and his back catalogue has been celebrated by Folk On Foot and BBC Radio 6 for Dan’s insight into social history and the human condition.
Since her debut Scissors In My Pocket on One Little Independent Records, Polly Paulusma has built a critically acclaimed body of work spanning songwriting, production and academic research, and has toured internationally including supporting Bob Dylan and Coldplay. Her work has been widely praised, with The Guardian noting “a voice capable of some unexpected twists” and Rolling Stone describing her debut as “an enchanting… intelligent folk pop”. Her recent album Wildfires brings her evolving fusi
Featuring - Dan Whitehouse

Award-winning singer-songwriter Dan Whitehouse returns to the UK stage this June with a run of intimate shows previewing and launching his forthcoming album Only Love.
Dividing his time between Tokyo and Wolverhampton, Dan Whitehouse has developed a reputation for moving, genre-defying work straddling song, story and soundscape. “I write folk songs, but not folk music,” he says, and his live performances reflect that eclectic spirit, whether he’s sat behind a piano, strapped to a guitar, or joined by long-time collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren. Dan’s expressive and delicately nuanced vocals mine a deep, rich seam of emotions and ideas.
These June dates offer an early glimpse into Only Love, a new body of work for piano and voice, created in collaboration with celebrated pianist David O'Brien who joins Dan for the tour finale and official album launch in Birmingham. Only Love, the album, looks unflinchingly at fatherhood, distance and the harsh emotional realities of a life lived in between continents.
Whitehouse’s young son lives in Japan, while his work remains in the UK. A 90-day visa shapes the rhythm of their relationship – arrival, connection, agonizing departure. Those fleeting, intense moments form the white-hot emotional core of this new album. Alongside new material, the performances will draw from Whitehouse’s wider catalogue, including The Glass Age and Voices From The Cones, making for an audience experience that is profound.
