Long before his crucial participation in David Bowie’s Blackstar, the sinuous, deftly swirling saxophone sounds of Donny McCaslin have been a dynamic presence on the international jazz. Replacing Michael Brecker in Steps Ahead back in the 90s, and making an especially telling contribution to the orchestral sweep of Maria Schneider’s Orchestra, he has led a string of small bands of distinction.
