About the show
Seckou Keita is a renowned kora virtuoso who stands as a luminary amongst African musicians. This concert marks Seckou's 30th year making music professionally and will showcase his immense talent and repertoire.
Always adventurous and seeking to challenge the norm through his kora playing, Seckou will surprise his audience with his latest album, Homeland, by taking them on a journey from past to present. Once again, he bridges musical genres, this time by blending traditional rhythms and modern compositions to create a special sound, embracing afro-pop, urban and hip-hop.
Rhiannon Giddens has made her career out of stretching her brand of folk music, with its miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities, into just about every field imaginable. She's a two-time Grammy Award-winning singer and multi-instrumentalist, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and was named by NPR as one of its 25 Most Influential Women Musicians of the 21st Century.
Transitional musical poetry written and delivered by award-winning poets and rap artists from the UK and Senegal will be craftily sampled and woven into the music, shaping a one of a kind experience. Backed by an electrifying band, this promises to be an explosive live show!
Featuring
Seckou Keita
A potent cocktail of spiritual Afro-Mandinka music with a twist of jazz composed by a Sekou Keita, a griot and international Kora player with a fantastic musical family pedigree. Respecting a musical tradition that stretches back to the 13th Century and the Mandinka Empire of West Africa, Seckou is an established contemporary master of the Kora, the 21-stringed African harp. With his feet firmly rooted in the 21st century and the identity of his heritage clear, Seckou is keen to experiment and develop fresh ideas. '... an inspired exponent of the Kora' (The Guardian).
