About the show

African Soul Rebels celebrates fearless artists who reshape tradition, challenge borders, and put rhythm at the centre of resistance and joy.

Leading the charge are the electrifying Les Amazones d’Afrique. This powerhouse collective of West African artists fuses ancient roots with future-facing sounds, bringing a message of strength, unity, and change. From Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage to President Obama’s playlist, their voices are being heard worldwide.

Joining them is the phenomenal Gasper Nali, a not-so-traditional babatoni player from Lake Malawi. With his three-metre-long, one-stringed homemade bass guitar, a stick, an empty beer bottle, and a cow-skin kick drum, he creates playful and joyful Afro beats.

And opening the night is young master musician N’famady Kouyaté, sensational balafon player already making a name for himself as a new voice pushing boundaries and connecting cultures.

This isn’t just a gig, it’s a revival of a movement, a celebration of African creativity and innovation – past, present and future.

Featuring - Les Amazones d'Afrique

Les Amazones d'Afrique appearing at this event

West Africa's first all-female super group who formed in the fight against violence towards women, featuring some of the greatest Malian musicians of the moment: Mamani Keïta, Rokia Koné, Mariam Doumbia (one half of Amadou & Mariam), Awa Sangho and Mariam Koné. Inspired by the formidable warriors of Dahomey, Les Amazones d'Afrique elegantly combine the Mandingo tradition with the power of today's African megacities.

Gasper Nali

Gasper Nali is a roots one-man-band from the small town of Nkhata Bay on the shores of Lake Malawi. He plays a one-string home-made 3-metre long Babatoni bass guitar with a stick and an empty beer bottle, and together with a cow skin kick drum and catchy melodies, he creates the most amazing and danceable original Afro Beats possible!

N'famady Kouyaté

N'famady Kouyaté appearing at this event

N’famady Kouyaté is a young energetic master musician from Guinea (Conakry), who relocated to Cardiff (Wales) in 2019. A talented multi-instrumentalist who wowed audiences across the UK and Ireland during autumn/winter 2019/20 with his modern interpretations of traditional West African Mandingue songs and rhythms supporting Gruff Rhys on the Pang! album tour. N’famady’s primary instrument is the balafon – the traditional wooden xylophone, sacred to West African culture and his family heritage of the griot/djeli. In Guinea he founded ‘Les Héritiers du Mandingue’ a tradi-modern group that toured extensively in West Africa.
